There's a reason people come back to Zilker. It's not just the open space or the way the light moves through the trees in the late afternoon. It's that the park holds something for almost everyone who's spent time in Austin. A picnic. A first walk. A first date.
For Jon and Brenna, it was all of the above.

A Surprise Proposal at Rock Island
Jon and Brenna have been together for four years. Their first date was at Zilker. So when they were in town from Houston, staying at the Loren, and Jon suggested a walk before dinner — it didn't feel like anything other than what it was. A walk to their spot.
They made their way out to Rock Island. Golden hour. The wind moving just right. The kind of late afternoon where the city across the water looks softer than usual.
And then he stopped, and pulled out the ring.
Brenna started laughing before he could even finish. Said yes immediately. The kind of yes where there's no pause to think about it because the answer has already been there for a long time.
A full-body, can't-believe-this-is-happening laugh — and the look on both of their faces in that light is something I'm still thinking about.

After the Yes
We stayed at Rock Island for about thirty minutes after, taking photos, letting it sink in. No phone calls. No big reveal to family. Just the two of them, and the park, and the wind, and the same skyline they'd been looking at together for four years.
They had dinner reservations at Nido afterward.
What Goes Into Planning a Surprise Proposal at Zilker
When someone reaches out to me about a proposal at Zilker, the first thing I want to know isn't logistics. It's the story. Why this park? Is there a specific spot that means something? A bench, a tree, the trail you walked the first time?
Because the location matters less than what the location is to you. Rock Island is beautiful on its own. But Rock Island as the place where a four-year relationship started — that's a different kind of photograph.
I ask questions about your partner too. How they handle surprises. Whether they get overwhelmed in crowds. Whether they need a moment to settle before they can be fully present. The answers shape everything — where I stand, how I move, how much space I give the moment before I get close.

The Logistics of Proposal Photography at Zilker
Zilker is a public park, which means there are real variables. Foot traffic on the trails. Picnickers on the great lawn. Cyclists, dogs, the occasional kite. Golden hour at Rock Island is peak time — it's when the light is best, and it's also when everyone else is out enjoying it.
That's why I get there early. I scout the spot, hold the position, and watch for where the light will land when you arrive. By the time you're walking up, I'm already in place — far enough away that I'm invisible, close enough that nothing gets missed.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Austin?
Reach out early. Golden hour dates fill up faster than people expect, and the planning conversation is worth having before you're in a rush. I'll help you think through the location, the timing, the approach, and anything else that would make the moment feel exactly right.

Marcela was so very helpful with our engagement photos. I was able to talk out everything I had planned and everything I was still trying to work out. Was super pleased with availability and her passion in helping us out with what we were going through. Would highly recommend to anyone!
